Another interesting article! I do have a perhaps naive question though… you mention that three nodes will make a perfect classifier for the bi-modal circular data. I certainly agree that for the data presented that is enough, but those are very rough boundaries. My intuition tells me that three nodes would not be enough if the space was better populated near the boundaries. Any thoughts?
